ASU's messy 3rd quarter leads to loss at Stephen F. Austin
It was a nightmare third quarter for Arizona State women's basketball.
ASU had 12 turnovers in the period, a ball-handling mess that SFA used to outpace the Sun Devils 25-8 for the quarter on their way to a 75-60 win Sunday at William R. Johnson Coliseum in Nacogdoches, Texas.
The Sun Devils returned from halfcourt break with a 1-point lead behind a strong second-quarter. ASU had flipped the score on the Ladyjacks, turning a 17-13 first-quarter deficit into a 34-33 lead.
The quarter started much as the first half, evenly contested and tied at 38 with 6:48 left. But a series of events in under a minute -- two steals, a rebound, two 3-pointers -- ignited the Ladyjacks, who jumped a 46-38 advantage at the 5:58 mark. SFA's rebounding and inside presence would push that lead to 16 points, 58-42, before the period ended.
ASU made a push in the fourth by never got closer than 11 points, the final time coming on a Jaddan Simmons layup after Trayanna Crisp stole the ball with 5:58 left.
ASU's Tyi Skinner finished with 22 points lead all scorers. Hunt added 12 points and 6 rebounds for the Devils.
It was the third loss in a row for ASU (6-4), who next face Prairie View A&M 2 p.m. Saturday at Desert Financial Center.
