Atascadero could be getting a new city manager — and he’s a familiar face. ‘This is my home’

The Atascadero City Council is considering hiring Jim Lewis as its new city manager.

Atascadero could soon have a new city manger — and it’s a familiar face.

On Monday, the Atascadero City Council announced it is considering approving a contract with James Lewis to become the city’s newest top administrator.

Lewis would replace outgoing city manager Rachelle Rickard, whose last day with the city is expected to be July 12. She’s retiring after 26 years with the city.

Lewis has served as city manager for the city of Pismo Beach for more than a decade. Prior to that, he worked as the assistant city manager and economic development director in Atascadero, where he currently lives.

During his time with Pismo Beach, he has “led the community through a decade of major capital projects including a new pier, plaza, Pismo Preserve and the Shell Beach Streetscape” as well as working to “position the city to be in its strongest-ever financial condition,” according to a news release.

“Jim brings a proven track record in local government success and is a knowledgeable, approachable, dynamic leader that will work for our community,” Atascadero Mayor Heather Moreno said in the release. “Mr. Lewis is recognized in our region and throughout the state as a leader. These strengths will allow us to continue delivering on the positive trajectory Atascadero businesses and residents are so excited about.”

Lewis currently serves on the League of California Cities Board of Directors representing the city manager of California and on the California City Management Foundation Board of Trustees, according to the release. He is also a longtime member of the Atascadero Kiwanis Club, Atascadero Bible Church and a den leader for Pack 51 Cub Scouts.

As Atascadero’s city manager, Lewis would serve as the city’s chief executive officer. He would be responsible for enforcing city codes, ordinances and regulations, as well as managing financial accountability, delivering major capital projects, facilitating commercial development and ensuring the efficient and economical delivery of city services, the release said.

“I am deeply honored and privileged for the opportunity to serve as the next city manager for Atascadero,” Lewis said in the release. “This is my home, where we are raising our family, and I simply love this place. I am looking forward to working with the Atascadero community, council and staff to enhance and preserve Atascadero’s unique character and quality of life. I appreciate the confidence of the mayor and City Council and will work diligently to achieve the goals of the city.”

The Atascadero City Council will consider the contract at its May 9 meeting. If approved, Lewis would take office July 1.
