Greece Athena passes by Arcadia, top players, games from Thursday's Section V football contests

Greece Athena quarterback Jayden Rapp had a new receiver to throw footballs to, and the connections between the longtime friends helped the Trojans come out on top in a Thursday night high school game against Greece Arcadia.

Khorie Reaves, the varsity newcomer, caught three of Rapp's four touchdown passes as the Trojans defeated rival Arcadia 28-0 at Athena.

The Trojans are undefeated after two weeks in Section V Class A2, before a showdown at reigning sectional champion Canandaigua Sept. 16.

"This game obviously meant a lot to us because they are crosstown rivals, we've been talking about it all day," Rapp said. "Obviously, thinking back to last year and what happened, we wanted this one bad."

Athena wide receiver Matthew Ranalletta (11) runs for yards after the catch in the first half against Arcadia during their Section V matchup Thursday, Sept. 8, 2022 at Greece Athena High School.

Greece Arcadia, which also lost at Canandaigua in the season opener last week, defeated Greece Athena during the 2021 regular season and again in sectionals.

Rapp completed 14 of his 19 pass attempts for 250 yards against Arcadia on Thursday. His first touchdown throw was a 24-yarder late in the first quarter to Reaves, a basketball standout at Athena.

"It was pretty fun," Reaves said. "I can definitely say that a touchdown is better than a dunk. I can definitely say that."

Athena led 13-0 after the team's next possession, when Rapp completed an eight-yard touchdown pass to junior tight end Connor Osier with 9:30 remaining in the second quarter.

Rapp found Reaves behind the Arcadia defense for a 67-yard touchdown with 2:57 remaining in the first half. A successful two-point conversion pass made Athena's lead 21 points.

A 51-yard pass play from Rapp to Reaves finished the scoring with 3:12 remaining in the third quarter. Arcadia's offense made it inside the Athena 10-yard line during the game's final seconds, but time ran out when senior linebacker Salvatore Butera sacked the Titans' quarterback.

"We'll come back together," Arcadia coach Brian Shonitsky said.

Section V football, Week 2: Top games from Thursday

Eastridge 32, Brockport 29

Eastridge's Brennen Russo and Loyall Mouzon connected on the game-winning touchdown with 3:36 remaining.

The Lancers' touchdown gave them a 30-29 advantage, but a lateral from Sherman Carson to Mouzon on the two-point conversion gave them a three-point cushion. Eastridge converted all four of its two-point attempts.

"Those kids are incredible," Eastridge coach Jasson Jobson said about Mouzon and Carson. "I haven't seen a performance like that in a long time."

In the waning moments, Brockport, which led 9-0 and 23-8 in the first half, threatened to score with a red zone trip to the 15-yardline, but Cordell Young jumped on interception at the 15-yard line improved the Lancers to 1-1. Brockport's Nathan Parker was 4-for-4 on PATs, but exited the game with an injury before having a chance at kicking the potential game-tying field goal.

"(On offense,) Young blocked his butt off for Carson and Mouzon. He accepted his role, and he made (a) big play for the team," Jobson said.

Russo threw three touchdowns in the win. He found Mouzon in the end zone twice, finding him on a 63-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

"He's getting better at quarterback every week," said Jobson, who recruited Russo from the baseball team. "It's impressive seeing him run the offense, and how composed he is."

Carson caught an 18-yard touchdown, but the highlight of the night was perhaps the 71-yard rushing touchdown he broke that gave the Lancers a 24-23 third quarter lead.

"That play was wild. That was his best play of the year by far," Jobson said.

The Lancers trailed 23-8 in the first half. They were even stuffed at the goal line by Brockport (0-2) on fourth-and-goal from the one while trailing by seven. Brockport coach Scott Nugent saw his team's final lead when Landon Scott threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Parker for a 29-24 edge with 9:33 left.

"They didn't pout, they just mad plays. Brockport is always tough," Jobson said.

Hilton 37, Webster Thomas 7

Jeff Broadnax was the main cog in a Hilton running game that delivered the first win of the season for the Cadets.

Broadnax, a senior, scored three touchdowns for the Cadets, who have moved into Section Class A1 from Class AA. Hilton bounced back from a loss at Webster Schroeder in Week 1.

Hilton took a 30-0 lead into halftime. The first score of the game was a safety after 79 blocked a Titans punt. Robert Lowry and Dylan O'Buck scored the Cadets' other touchdowns.

Webster Schroeder 17, Churchville-Chili 0

The Warriors improved to 2-0 thanks to a two-touchdown performance by quarterback Drew Pagano.

The Webster Schroeder senior threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Torance Washington, who turned up the field and broke multiple tackles on his way into the end zone. Pagano also ran for a three-yard touchdown.

The Saints fell to 1-1.
