Athens area's top performers: Here's who stood out in cross country, volleyball and softball

While high school football dominates Friday nights, cross country, volleyball and softball rule the rest of the week.

Here's a look at the standout performers last week around the Athens area.

SOFTBALL

Brinley Baughcum, Ava Moon, Madison Hawkins, Oconee County – In Oconee County’s 14-6 victory over Hart County, Baughcum had four hits, two runs and four RBIs, Moon was the winning pitcher with seven hits, one earned run and four strikeouts and added two hits, one run and one RBI and Hawkins had three hits (including two doubles), four runs and two RBIs.

Bailey Bowen, Maddie Johnson, North Oconee – In North Oconee’s 6-5 victory Tuesday over Walnut Grove, Bowen three hits (including two doubles) and four RBIs, including the game-winner in the seventh inning, and Johnson scattered 14 hits and struck out 14 in a complete-game performance.

Grace Howington, Blair Carter, Eliana Christian, McKinlee Turner, Athens Christian – In Athens Christian’s 19-13 victory Tuesday over Barrow Arts & Sciences Academy, Howington had five hits (including a three-run home run), carter had three hits (including a solo home run) and two RBIs, Christian pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts and had three hits and five RBIs and Turner added two hits and three RBIs.

Bailey Smith, Michaela Cromer, Lily Pittman, Madison County – In Madison County’s 9-4 victory Tuesday over Cherokee Bluff, Smith pitched a complete-game four-hitter with three strikeouts Cromer had three hits and two runs and Pittman had a home run and two RBIs.

Taylor Spivey, Greyson Busch, Madison Hanchey, Jefferson – In Jefferson’s 6-0 victory Monday over Eastside, Spivey tossed a four-hit shutout with one walk and three strikeouts and hit a triple, Busch had two hits, two runs and two RBIs and Hanchey had two hits (including a double), one run and two RBIs. In Jefferson’s 13-1 victory Wednesday over Clarke Central, Spivey and Bush both hit home runs and had two RBIs apiece.

Jordan Turner, Apalachee – In Apalachee’s 14-1 victory Tuesday over Shiloh, Turner had three hits, one run and two RBIs.

Audrey Vandagriff, Bailey Throckmorton, Taylor Thomas, Lauren McDonald, Prince Avenue Christian – In Prince Avenue Christian’s 11-0 victory Monday over Providence Christian, Vandagriff had a home run, four RBIs and a stolen base. In the Wolverines’ 8-0 victory Tuesday over Oglethorpe County, Vandagriff had three hits (including a triple), three RBIs and two stolen bases, Throckmorton pitched a complete-game three-hitter with three strikeouts, Thomas had two hits, two RBIs and a stolen base and McDonald had one hit and two RBIs.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Isaac Heydinger, Eli Beall, Abel Carter, Ethan Bryant, Westminster Christian – At the WCA Invitational on Thursday in Watkinsville, Heydinger finished second among 59 runners in 18 minutes, 36 seconds, followed by Beall (second place, 19:49), Carter (eighth place, 20:39) and Bryant (10th place, 20:50).

Stephen Casey, Noah Norris, Jacob Carruthers, Barrow Arts & Sciences Academy – At the Best of Barrow on Friday at Fort Yargo State Park in Winder, Casey finished fifth among 24 runners in 17 minutes, 34 seconds, followed by Norris (sixth place, 17:43) and Carruthers (seventh place, 18:01).

Ben Davis, Jefferson – At the Jefferson Invitational on Friday at Lamar Murphy Park, Davis finished first among 91 runners in 16 minutes, 43 seconds.

Isael Guerra-Baca, Hayden Hodges, East Jackson – At the Jefferson Invitational on Friday at Lamar Murphy Park, Guerra-Baca finished fourth among 91 runners in 17:06 and Hodges finished ninth in 17:21.

Daniel Laird, Pierce McWhorter, Kyle Kehoe, Isaac Sanders, Winder-Barrow – At the Best of Barrow on Friday at Fort Yargo State Park in Winder, Laird finished first among 24 runners in 16 minutes, 34 seconds, followed by McWhorter (second place, 16:57), Kehoe (fourth place, 17:22) and Sanders (eighth place, 18:03).

Luke McGarity, Oglethorpe County – At the Jefferson Invitational on Friday at Lamar Murphy Park, McGarity finished fifth among 91 runners in 17 minutes, 7 seconds.

Luke Sigman, T.J. Ballard, Josiah Alfonso, Apalachee – At the Best of Barrow on Friday at Fort Yargo State Park in Winder, Sigman finished third among 24 runners in 16 minutes, 58 seconds, followed by Ballard (ninth place, 18:16) and Alfonso (10th place, 18:16).

Beck Wolf-Hardy, Max Carlson, James Daniel, Clarke Central – At the Mountain Invitational Tuesday at Unicoi State Park in Helen, Wolf-Hard finished first among 211 runners in 16 minutes, 9 seconds, followed by Carlson (third place, 16:32) and Daniel (fourth place, 16:46).

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Averie Akin, Hailey Tedder, Apalachee – At the Best of Barrow on Friday at Fort Yargo State Park in Winder, Akin finished first among 17 runners in 19 minutes, 50 seconds, followed by Tedder, who finished fifth in 22:32.

Ellie Beedle, Ansley Hovater, Annslee Mitchell, Westminster Christian – At the WCA Invitational on Thursday in Watkinsville, Beedle finished first among 28 runners in 24 minutes, 47 seconds, followed by Hovater (second place, 24:49) and Mitchell (third place, 26:44).

Smita Caroll, Emma Busbee, Barrow Arts & Sciences Academy – At the Best of Barrow on Friday at Fort Yargo State Park in Winder, Caroll finished second among 17 runners in 20 minutes, 14 seconds and Busbee finished fourth in 20:52.

Sydney Henderson, Lizzie Wadsworth, Oglethorpe County – At the Jefferson Invitational on Friday at Lamar Murphy Park, Henderson finished second among 77 runners in 20 minutes, 5 seconds and Wadsworth finished fifth in 20:51.

Matilee Rogers, Winder-Barrow – At the Best of Barrow on Friday at Fort Yargo State Park in Winder, Rogers finished third among 17 runners in 20 minutes, 50 seconds.

Louisa Temple-Roberts, Monsignor Donovan – At the WCA Invitational on Thursday in Watkinsville, Temple-Roberts finished fourth among 28 runners in 26 minutes, 47 seconds.

Anna Warren, Erin O’Brien, Morgan Eldridge, Jackson County – At the Alexander/Asics Invitational Saturday in Fairburn, Warren finished eighth among 169 runners in the Girls 5A-7A race in 20 minutes, 39 seconds. In the Girls Championship race, O’Brien finished 36th among 267 runners in a school-record time of 19:08, topping the previous mark by nearly 30 seconds. At the Jefferson Invitational on Friday at Lamar Murphy Park, Warren finished seventh among 77 runners in 21:05 and Eldridge finished eighth in 21:10.

VOLLEYBALL

Sydney McCutcheon, Paisley Gillespie, Ruthie Fowler, Cadence Thao, Jackson County – In Jackson County’s 2-0 victory Tuesday over Banks County, McCutcheon had five kills, five digs and 24 assists (recording her 2,000th career assist), Fowler had three aces and Thao had 12 digs. In a 2-0 victory Tuesday over Elbert County, McCutcheon had four digs and 15 assists, Gillespie had 11 kills and Fowler had six kills and six aces.

Isabel Miller, Annsley Flack, Olivia Miller, Brinley Bartlett, Bailey Bartlett, Braden Koch, Marilyn Whitener, Oconee County – In Oconee County’s sweep Tuesday of Franklin County and Hart County, Isabel Miller had 29 assists, Flack had 16 digs, Olivia Miller had nine kills, Brinley Bartlett had eight kills, Bailey Bartlett had eight kills and five aces, Koch had five kills, eight digs and four aces and Whitener had three kills and two blocks.

Rachel Reninger, Olivia Nealy, Mary Miller, Emma Hooper, Athens Academy — In victories over Blessed Trinity, Sandy Creek, Woodward Academy, Loganville, Flowery Branch and Monroe and a loss to North Cobb, Reininger had 94 kills, 56 digs, six aces and four blocks, Nealy had 67 kills, 49 digs, 14 aces and four blocks, Miller had 163 assists, 35 digs, nine blocks, seven kills and six aces and Hooper had 42 digs and 17 aces.

Meghan Tucker, Lauren Daniel, Sutton Szoke, Lucy Wages, North Oconee – In North Oconee’s 2-0 victory Tuesday over Eastside, Tucker had eight kills, Daniel had six kills, Szoke had nine digs and Wages had 17 assists and seven digs.
