Athens-Clarke County Fire Chief Jeffrey Scarbrough has retired from the position he has held the past 10 years.

An official announcement of his retirement had not been made by Athens-Clarke County government as of Friday. However, at a commission work session this week, it was noted that Capt. Nate Moss is now the interim fire chief.

Scarbrough’s last day was Thursday.

“He’s worked 43 years in fire services, the last 10 with us, and he wants to move closer and spend more time with his family,” Moss said Friday.

Scarbrough, who grew up in Jonesboro, was unavailable for comment.

The retirement is Scarbrough’s second. He served 26 years with the Clayton County Fire Department, retiring as a deputy chief in 2006. He was then hired as fire chief for the Sandy Springs Fire Department.

Scarbrough left that role in 2013 after he was hired as fire chief for Athens-Clarke County.
