Athens-Clarke police arrest woman in shooting of man during dispute over tossed trash

Athens-Clarke police arrested a suspect Thursday in the shooting of a homeless man during a late-night dispute along Hawthorne Avenue.

The victim, who declined transportation to a hospital for a wound to his hip, told police after the shooting that he did not want to press charges against the woman who allegedly shot him.

The 29-year-old man, who told police he “bounces around from camp to camp every night," was urged by police to seek medical attention.

The shooting occurred about 11:15 p.m. in the parking lot of Walgreens, which was closed at the time, but the dispute between the parties had occurred nearby in the Checkers restaurant parking lot, according to the report.

Police said someone in a car had tossed trash out and that the victim picked the trash up and threw it back into the car.

When the victim walked away, the suspect drove near him, where another argument ensued followed shortly by gunshots, according to police.

A responding officer collected four 9mm shell casings on the pavement.

Detectives followed up on the evidence and on Thursday, police Lt. Shaun Barnett announced the arrest of Deaundrea Silmon, 22, of Windy Hill Way, Athens, on a charge of aggravated assault. She remained in jail Friday without bond.
