Athens-Clarke police seeking suspects in shootings that left 2 men wounded

Athens-Clarke police are investigating the shootings of two people on Monday as well as a barrage of gunfire that targeted a home with the resident inside.

Police were dispatched about 4 p.m. Monday to an apartment complex on Chalfont Lane, a neighborhood off Westchester Lane, where witnesses reported hearing about 20 gunshots in a rapid succession.

While police investigated, officers were notified that a 29-year-old Augusta man had arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound, according to the report.

Officers determined the man was wounded at the Chalfont location. Several .380-caliber shell casings were found, but a motive and a suspect have not been determined, police said.

Then about 10:45 p.m. Monday, police were dispatched to a shooting on Jennings Mill Parkway, where they located a 40-year-old resident of the apartment complex with bullet wounds in each leg.

Another resident told police he heard some men arguing, then gunshots, police Lt. Shaun Barnett said Tuesday.

Police tended to the victim until an ambulance arrived and took him to a hospital, Barnett said.

The victim was “not entirely cooperative,” and a motive and suspects have not been identified, he said.

Last Friday, police began investigating a shooting off Magnolia Street, a residential neighborhood between Broad and Baxter streets.

Police are looking for the occupants of a silver Nissan Maxima with dark window tint that was parked in front of the house targeted by the shooters, according to police. A person in the car fired about 20 shots into the house before fleeing the scene, according to police.

Police said a 19-year-old man who lived in the home collected the shell casings at the crime scene prior to police arriving, but an officer spotted him dropping the casings at another location, police said.

Police have a video that a witness made that captures the shooting, but so far the shooter has not been identified, police said.

The resident of the house told police he did not believe the shooting was gang-related. The man told police he was inside when the bullets pelted the house and debris began falling down around him as the bullets hit nearby.

The man refused to let police search the house, but officers taped the house off from anyone entering and took the man to the police station, where he was charged with tampering with evidence due to him collecting the shell casings.

Detectives reported they would seek a search warrant to enter the house.
