Athens man killed in crash on Lexington Road; Toccoa family of 5 to hospital

An Athens man was killed Wednesday night after police said he was driving in the wrong direction on a highway and collided head on with an oncoming vehicle.

The crash that occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Lexington Road claimed the life of 67-year-old Jesse Garner of Rolling Ridge Drive.

The crash occurred just west of Walmart near the Oak Drive intersection, according to police.

A family of five from Stephens County in a Nissan Rouge were all transported to a local hospital with injuries, but police said the injuries were non-life threatening.

Police said Garner was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu west in in the eastbound lane when he collided with the Nissan, driven by a 23-year-old Toccoa man. The man’s 20-year-old wife, and their three children, ages 3, 2, and 4 months, were injured.

Anyone with information about the wreck is asked to contact Senior Police Officer James Trotter at 762-400-7362.
