Athens woman extorted after she was told to get nude for spiritual cleansing

A 33-year-old Athens woman has found herself in an embarrassing situation after she recently answered an advertisement to do a spiritual cleansing in the nude.

The woman reported to Athens-Clarke police that she was on her computer when she clicked an advertisement that instructed her to strip naked and “spiritually cleanse” herself.

The woman contacted a messenger on the ad, who began giving her instructions on how to do the cleansing, police said.

Without her knowledge, the man was making a video of her performing the cleansing, police said.

After the cleansing took place, the extortion began.

The man sent her a portion of the video and demanded she send him $800 or the videos would be sent online to her family and friends. The woman sent $500 and the man gave her three days to come up with the remainder.

She called police later that same day to report the extortion. The matter was turned over to investigators.

Athens-Clarke police Lt. Jody Thompson said Friday that while spiritual cleansing is not a common scam, sexual extortion is widespread.

“Scammers have become very creative and often prey upon fear of embarrassment,” he said.
