Athletes of the Week: Barstow’s Demetri Curiel and Serrano’s Sara Segall

School: Barstow

Grade: Junior

This week’s accomplishment: Curiel was the driving force for the Aztecs in a 41-38 victory over Granite Hills last week. The running back took 25 carries for 299 yards and three touchdowns. His longest carry of the night went for 83 yards.

What do you like most about your sport: The thing I love the most about football is the hard work. The grind, so to say.

How long have you been playing your sport and how did you get started: I have been playing football since fourth/fifth grade. I started playing football after watching Troy Polamalu highlights one day on YouTube. Then I fell in love with the game.

Pregame ritual: Always a prayer.

Most memorable sports moment: My most memorable sports moment was winning my first little league championship in seventh grade.

If you could be someone else for a day, who would it be and why: I’d be LeBron James because he has the perfect athlete life.

Something most people don’t know about you: I didn’t learn how to play running back until eighth grade.

How would you spend $1 million: I would buy some land to build some properties for my family and invest in real estate.

Where would you go if you could travel anywhere in the world: Paris.

If you had an extra hour every day, how would you spend it: If I had an extra hour every day, I’d probably be watching film (insert laughing emoji).

What superpower do you wish you had: If I had to pick any superpower to have I would definitely pick flying.

Favorite sports team: Pittsburgh Steelers.

Favorite athlete: Najee Harris.

Favorite superhero: Captain America.

Favorite TV show: “Snowfall.”

Favorite movie: “Twilight.”

Favorite song: “Early Mornings” by Meek Mill.

Favorite meal: A breakfast burrito with orange juice.

Sport: Tennis

School: Serrano

Grade: Sophomore

This week’s accomplishment: Segall helped the Diamondbacks to two victories last week while not dropping a set. In a 13-5 victory over Apple Valley on Sept. 27, Segall swept with scores of 7-6 (2), 6-3, 6-2, and followed that up with three bagels in a 17-1 victory over Sultana two days later.

What do you like most about your sport: The strategy that goes into the game.

How long have you been playing your sport and how did you get started: I have been playing tennis for just a year and a half. My best friend Brynne Staley’s mom introduced me to a tennis academy and I continued from then on.

Pregame ritual: Wrapping my fingers.

Most memorable sports moment: In our first league game of the season I was the last one on the court. Both teams were watching and cheering. I felt a lot of pressure yet tons of excitement and motivation to win. In the end not only did I win the match but that also gave our school an overall win.

Something most people don’t know about you: I am a vegetarian.

How would you spend $1 million: Give most to ones in need and invest in stocks.

Where would you go if you could travel anywhere in the world: All around Europe.

If you had an extra hour every day, how would you spend it: Hanging out with my best friends.

What superpower do you wish you had: Telekinesis.

Favorite sports team: I don’t have one.

Favorite athlete: Rafael Nadal.

Favorite TV show: “Survivor.”

Favorite meal: Any Mexican food.

Favorite local restaurant: Rubio's Coastal Grill.

Favorite app: I don’t have one.
