Athletic apparel store at Tacoma Mall set to remodel and rebrand. Here’s what we know

Story has been updated with statement from mall media representative.

Another store at Tacoma Mall is set to remodel into something new, city records show.

United Kingdom-based JD Sports filed plans April 11 for a new store, revamping one of its current brands already at the mall.

Plans call for interior demolition and remodel of the Finish Line space. JD Sports is Finish Line’s parent company. The store’s address lists it as No. 468, and the permit filings show the remodel planned for “Spaces 468A & 468B.”

A media representative with the mall confirmed Tuesday that JD Sports is expanding the Finish Line store into an adjacent space.

The work is set to begin in June, though plans can change depending on permitting speed. The filing is listed as missing some of its required paperwork.

No further details were immediately available from the company when contacted Monday.

SGB Media, which covers the active lifestyle market industry, reported in early February that JD Sports plans to expand its number of U.S. stores to more than 800 over a five-year period. Those plans include store conversions of Finish Line sites into JD-branded stores counting for around half of the new sites. The rest will be new sites, with an emphasis on Western U.S. locations.

JD Sports so far has 22 of its retail stores in U.S. malls and shopping centers owned and operated by Simon Property Group, which owns the Tacoma Mall. The stores feature sportswear and sneakers, featuring brands such as Nike, Adidas, Jordan, Champion, Vans and The North Face along with its own brand labels.

The remodel site is one of several new overhauls at the mall. Bath & Body Works is undergoing remodeling following plans filed late last year. Other retailers submitting remodel plans include Apple, filed Jan. 10, and Victoria’s Secret, filed March 9.

New vendors coming include Filipino chicken chain Jollibee and White Barn Candle Co., connected with Bath & Body Works.
