Athletic sign forward from Red Bulls II

Feb. 26—Sebastian Elney has signed with Hartford Athletic for the 2021 season, the team announced Thursday.

The 23-year-old forward is the 15th player signed for the upcoming season, which has a flexible start date of May 1.

"We are so excited to bring Sebastian to the club," Hartford Athletic coach Harry Watling said in a statement. "He will be essential to the team, contributing with goals along with a relentless energy to cover every blade of grass for the team. He will be a nightmare for any defender he plays against, not giving them a moments rest."

Elney, a native of Boca Raton, Florida, comes to Hartford from USL Championship foe New York Red Bulls II. In the shortened 2020 season, Elney scored three goals in 12 games. As a rookie in 2019, Elney scored four goals in 25 games for Red Bulls II.

He played his college career at Maryland, where he was part of the Terrapins' 2018 national championship team. In 81 games from 2015-18, he scored 19 goals and added 10 assists.

Elney holds dual citizenship in the U.S. and Haiti. He's represented the U.S. at the U-17, U-18 and U-20 levels, and was named to Haiti's CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship preliminary roster Tuesday. Final teams will be announced March 8, and the competition runs March 18-30.
