New Atlantic Beach survey targets sustainability, environmental stewardship
Deadline for responses extended to Dec. 15
In a process that relies heavily on direct input from residents, planning for the future of Atlantic Beach is moving full-steam ahead.
The city's 2040 Vision questionnaire, distributed in September and October, generated hundreds of responses. A vote on the resulting proposed vision statement will be conducted during the City Commission meeting on Monday, Dec. 13.
According to Deputy City Manager Kevin Hogencamp, the city asked for participation in the visioning exercise in utility bills, on the city website, on various social media platforms, in its e-newsletter, direct emails and through word of mouth.
Some organizations even devoted space in their newsletters to promote participation.
"In all, we received a whopping 785 responses to a fairly extensive questionnaire, about 13 percent of Atlantic Beach households," said Hogencamp via email. "On average, it took more than six minutes to complete the questionnaire so collectively, that’s more than 90 hours that our residents spent on this exercise."
In the meantime, community input is once again being sought, in the form of a new survey targeting sustainability, resiliency and climate action. The results are intended to guide the city's Environmental Stewardship Committee towards next steps with the Community Action Plan.
The city hopes to receive at least 1,400 responses and has extended the survey deadline to Wednesday, Dec. 15, but further responses may be accepted beyond that date.
As an incentive to complete the detailed survey, respondents may enter to win a new beach cruiser bicycle, donated by Bike & Beach bicycle shop on Third Street in Beaches Town Center. A shorter version of the survey is available for those who wish to weigh in without being entered for the bicycle drawing.
