‘It’s unreal’: ATM stolen from vape shop in University City

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has tracked down a U-Haul truck believed to be connected to the theft of an ATM Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred around 4 a.m. at the Tobacco and Vape shop just off Mallard Creek Church Road.

The owner of the vape shop said the ATM was sitting near the front door. They said they are now reconsidering having an ATM out in the open.

Surveillance video shows a suspect grabbing a rock from the U-Haul and throwing it through the front door of the business.

They then yanked the ATM out of the store by tying a rope to it and pulling it out using the U-Haul as leverage.

The U-Haul was later found abandoned by police at a different scene on J N Pease Place near Ben Craig Drive.

An employee who said he works next door to the Tobacco and Vape shop told Channel 9 he was told about the burglary when he came in for his shift Wednesday morning.

“I mean, it’s unreal to know that people are capable of doing that,” the employee said.

He said he wants the people behind the crime to think about the harm this incident has brought to the owner of the business.

“That’s somebody’s business. That’s what provides food on people’s tables, right, and for them to just do that. You know, it’s unreal to me,” the employee explained.

Moving forward, he said he plans to be more vigilant and is “definitely going to keep a closer watch, especially around the holidays.”

Channel 9 has reached out to police for additional details. We are waiting to hear back.
