Atmospheric rains arrive Friday in Portland, Vancouver area

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The highly anticipated atmospheric river brings soaking rains and warmer temperatures to the Portland, Vancouver area Friday.

This latest atmospheric river comes just a week after much of western Oregon and Washington experienced a harsh blast of winter weather. Last week’s wind and ice has left many trees vulnerable to the impact of heavy rains over an already saturated landscape.

Leaning trees could fall victim to added rain, making the soil soft. This comes as nearly two to four inches of rain is possible from Friday to Sunday. Warmer valley temperatures will push snow elevation levels to nearly 6,000 – 7,000 ft. High elevation rain could melt snow rapidly, leading to the threat of minor flooding in addition to the inches of rain expected.

Portland’s temperatures will remain in the upper 40s Friday before climbing into the low to mid 50s Saturday. Easterly winds will help keep temperatures in the 40s Friday, but aren’t expected to gust any higher than 20 mph.

The wet weather soggy begins to slow later in the day Saturday. However, scattered showers remain in the forecast through Sunday. Portland’s skies aren’t expected to dry until the start of next week.
