Shelli Speakman of Mutt Farm is one of the only animal rehabilitators in Southern Ohio.

The stark increase in wildlife admissions to rehabilitators throughout the State of Ohio has necessitated an increase in housing for animals. Loss of habitat, escalation of human-animal encounters and extreme weather can all be attributed to this uptick in patients coming to rehabilitators. In cases of extreme weather patterns, storms can cause baby animals to get blown from nests or become orphans due to the loss of their parents.

This new pre-release enclosure is vital for wildlife rehabilitators because it facilitates a key step in achieving the goal of returning an animal to the wild. While the animal is in the enclosure, acclimation to its natural habitat as well as developing its natural instincts, begins. It is a highly rewarding accomplishment when an animal is returned to the wild where it is able to continue contributing to the biodiversity of Ohio.

Mutt Farm is working on raising $1,500 for the pre-release enclosure.

Mutt Farm Wildlife Rehabilitation is a 501c3 non-profit organization located in Stoutsville, Ohio. They provide services to 14 counties across south central Ohio.

Ohio Wildlife Rehabilitators are volunteers for the Ohio Division of Wildlife. Speakman jokes that rehabilitators pay to volunteer since they are responsible for their own supplies and equipment. Mutt Farm accepts monetary and supply donations, including dawn dish soap, puppy pads, old towels, unscented baby wipes, small baby toys and more.
