Atrium Health and Supportive Housing Communities unveil new housing program

Atrium Health and Supportive Housing Communities launched a new housing and health program on Feb. 1.

Through collaboration with Atrium Health, the local nonprofit Supportive Housing Communities (SHC) has dedicated time to finding permanent housing for individuals and families without stable homes.

The Health and Housing program will serve 20 different households throughout Mecklenburg County. With funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s Continuum of Care Program Competition, SHC will provide rental assistance and other housing-related support. Atrium Health will provide clients housed through SHC with healthcare-specific supportive services.

Assistant Vice President of Social Strategy Don Jonas said he understood the need for stable housing, especially when it comes to your health.

“Atrium Health understands that when people do not have access to safe, stable housing, it is difficult for them to manage anything else,” Jonas said.”Without stable housing, preexisting health issues often deteriorate.” Treatment outcomes are less certain when people don’t have a safe and secure place to recover after receiving care.

Clients who will be housed through the program will be selected by Atrium Health based on hospital usage due to a lack of housing or people who are currently homeless and living with at least two disabling conditions.

CEO and president of Supportive Housing Communities, Laura Caldwell, said she is honored to work side by side with Atrium Health and thanked local government partners for supporting the program.

“We are so honored to serve side-by-side with our local health care system to help some of our most vulnerable neighbors recover,” said Caldwell. “Atrium Health was quick to respond to the request for its partnership to help serve a unique group of neighbors who suffer repeat emergency room visits or extended hospital stays due to their housing needs.”
