Iraq’s Haider al-Abadi Fires Baghdad Security Chief After Attack Kills 37

BAGHDAD (AP) — A statement from his office says the Iraqi prime minister has fired the head of Baghdad’s security, hours after an attack on a Shiite shrine killed 37 people and less than a week after a car bombing killed at least 186 people in the center of the capital.

Haider al-Abadi fired the commander of Baghdad Operations on Friday, as the embattled prime minister faces growing anger and protests over the lack of security in the capital.

The Baghdad bombing was one of the deadliest attacks since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 and the deadliest single attack claimed by the Islamic State group worldwide.

After the Baghdad attack, al-Abadi announced new security measures, but it is unclear if any of the measures have yet been implemented.

The minister of interior submitted his resignation Tuesday, but Al-Abadi has not accepted it.
