‘Attacked Above and Below’: Demonstrators Protest Anti-Asian Train Attacks in NYC
Concerned AsAm Citizens of NYC (CAAC NYC), a grassroots initiative that aims to stop the increasing hate crimes on Asian Americans, took its protests directly to the subway on Wednesday.
The group held its first NYC Subway Ride Protest around 6 p.m. at the Brooklyn Bridge subway station. Their goal was to educate commuters about the violence the Asian American community is facing, especially on New York Subway stations, according to AsAm News.
Around 50 protesters took the Uptown 6 train to Grand Central Station while handing out 200 Upstander Bags containing #StopAsianHate SKYE buttons, stickers and bystander information flyers.
“We are outraged that Asian Americans are being attacked both above and below ground. And to make matters worse, bystanders are watching us get attacked with complete indifference,” Barbara Yau, co-founder of CAAC NYC, said in a statement. “This is absolutely unacceptable! Asian American are human beings, and we should be treated as such. That is why we are protesting and why we are giving our fellow New Yorkers the push — and the tools — they need to become better upstanders for everyone in our city.”
CAACNYC was co-founded by Yau, Shirley L. Ng and Judy Ng in April 2020.
The Guardian Angels accompanied the protesters along with an escort from the NYPD.

After reaching Grand Central Station, the group marched on the streets chanting, “Stop the violence, stop the hate!” and “See something? Do something!”
The march ended at the Grand Central Clock Tower, where protesters shouted, “Stop the hate!"
