Attacks in Paris: Reactions From the Ground
In the face of multiple terror attacks that killed more than 100 people in Paris on Friday, local residents took to social media to offer safe haven and track loved ones in the city.
Under the hashtag #PorteOuverte, which translates to #OpenDoor, Parisians offered shelter, a place to sleep—and usually a bit of hospitality—via Twitter.
On Facebook, concerned friends outside Paris were able to use the social media network’s Safety Check function to see if loved ones were near the terror attacks.
On Twitter, this offer came from the 18th arrondissement, the district south of the Stade de France, where multiple explosions were reported during a Germany-France soccer match—an offer of tea and clean sheets.
Offers poured in near the Place de la Republique, which is not far from the Bataclan, a concert venue where more than 100 people were held hostage. It’s unclear how many survived the ordeal to accept that help—the Paris deputy mayor said at least 118 people were killed there early Saturday.
Managers for the concert’s performers, Eagles of Death Metal, were still trying to assess whether the band and crew had all escaped safely.
French news reported that Parisian taxis had turned off their meters to help people get home.
