Attempt to break record of most cereal boxes toppled like dominoes: What happened

Imagine rows of cereal boxes lined up on a basketball court waiting for the first boxes to topple, sending the rest tumbling in domino fashion.

Now, imagine a staggering 15,000 of those cereal boxes set up to do just that.

Why? To break a Guinness world record — but that's not all. It was also designed to raise awareness of food insecurity and hunger relief. In the U.S., 34 million people, including 9 million children, are food insecure, according to Feeding America, a hunger relief organization.

And fall those boxes of cereal did. While it wasn't the full 15,000, it was enough — 12,952 cereal boxes — to break the record of 6,391.

Move for Hunger, a national nonprofit that fights hunger and food waste, and the Kroger Company of Michigan teamed up for the "Topple Hunger" challenge Thursday at the Henry Ford Detroit Pistons Performance Center in New Center.

A Guinness World Records representative oversaw the event, according to Kroger.

"The true triumph lies in our collective effort to combat hunger. Each cascading box represents not just a record-breaking feat, but a promise fulfilled," said Cam Barrett, corporate affairs manager for the Kroger Co. of Michigan, in a statement.

All that cereal will be donated to local food banks and the United Dairy Industry of Michigan will donate the milk.

"Together, we've not only broken a Guinness World Record, but also fortified our collective resolve to create a world where no one goes to bed hungry," Barrett said.

The previous record was set in 2021 by a Long Beach, New York, middle school.

Other sponsors of the event were Hellmann's, Lineage Foundation for Good, University Moving & Storage and the Detroit Pistons. While the event is over, the public can still sponsor a cereal box with a $5 donation at topplehunger.com. Event sponsors will match all donations up to $75,000.
