Attempted armored vehicle robbery in Country Club Hills turns into shoot out: FBI
An attempted robbery of an armored vehicle outside the Country Club Hills Walmart Monday turned into a shoot out, police officials said.
At 10:24 a.m., Country Club Hills police say they responded to a call of an active shooter at Walmart, 4005 W. 168th Place. The preliminary investigation found the shots were fired during an attempted armed robbery of an armored vehicle, according to a police news release.
A FBI spokeswoman said the suspected offenders quickly drove a Sudan vehicle up to the armored vehicle and began shooting. The armored vehicle workers and Walmart security returned fire, she said.
The offenders then jumped out of their car and stole the vehicle of an elderly person nearby and drove off, the spokeswoman said.
There were no reported injuries.
Walmart spokesman Joe Pennington said no store associates were injured and directed questions about the attempted robbery to police and the FBI. Pennington said Monday night the store was still closed as law enforcement conducted its investigation.
“We’re waiting for law enforcement to conclude its investigation to determine when it’s safe to reopen,” he said.
The FBI also responded to a bank robbery at U.S. Bank, 4350 Lincoln Highway, in Matteson earlier in the day, according to the spokeswoman. Shots were fired in that robbery, but no one was injured, she said.
The FBI spokeswoman said it’s unclear if the robberies are related.
The FBI is offering a $20,000 reward to anyone with information that leads to an arrest in this or other armored vehicle robberies and attempts, the spokeswoman said.
