Attempted murder charge filed after Ravenna man stabbed with knife

A man is accused of trying to kill a Ravenna man by stabbing him in the abdomen outside his apartment March 18.

A grand jury indicted Nathan M. Carocci, 31, on charges of first-degree felony attempted murder. A police report and court records describe Carocci as homeless.

Carocci is also charged with aggravated burglary and two counts of assault, all second-degree felonies, and first-degree misdemeanor assault. The indictment was filed in Portage County Court of Common Pleas on Thursday.

According to a police report, a woman reported she had been at the Ravenna man's South Meridian Street apartment with him at about 4 p.m. March 18 when Carocci arrived. An argument began between Carocci and the Ravenna man, which soon became physical, just outside the apartment.

The woman said she stepped between them, but Carocci allegedly pushed her down some stairs just outside the apartment. Injuries to her were not reported. The woman said she did not see a knife in Carocci's hand, but saw him making stabbing motions and then the man was holding his bloody abdomen.

The woman drove the victim to UH Portage Medical Center and police were called to the hospital. Police were able to speak to the man while he was being treated and he identified Carocci as his assailant. The victim's neighbor, who had taken Carocci to the apartment, reported he had seen the initial altercation, but then walked away. He said he subsequently saw Carocci running away from the apartment.

A warrant was issued for Carocci's arrest. He was booked into Portage County Jail early Monday afternoon, according to a jail booking report.

The indictment identifies the Ravenna man as the victim of both felony assault charges, with one of those charges specifying a deadly weapon was used. According to the police report, a fixed-blade knife with blood on the blade was taken as evidence.

The indictment identifies the woman as the victim of the misdemeanor charge.

Carocci is scheduled for arraignment in Portage County Court of Common Pleas on Monday. In the meantime, he was ordered held in the jail on a 10% of $100,000 bond in Portage County Municipal Court in Ravenna, where a felony assault charge was initially filed.

An attorney for Carocci could not immediately be identified.
