What danger does E. coli pose?

The peril of E. coli depends on the type of E. coli. For E. coli O45, the consequences go from bloody diarrhea to death.

“Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS),” Safeway’s recall notice states. “HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly; the condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death.”
