The state attorney general has announced a new acting prosecutor for Sussex County.

Carolyn Murray will replace Annmarie Taggart, who is retiring in December, as the acting Sussex County prosecutor.

"Carolyn Murray has dedicated her professional life to the pursuit of justice, and her esteemed career has spanned many facets of the legal profession," said Attorney General Matthew Platkin. "I am grateful that she has agreed to fill this critical law enforcement leadership role."

Murray is a former family court judge and a former state and federal prosecutor, including serving as the acting Essex County prosecutor for six years. She has served as the inaugural director of the Conviction Review Unit which is part of the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability.

In 2017, Murray was nominated and confirmed as a Superior Court judge. Before that, she had multiple roles at the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. She started her career as an attorney in Newark before joining the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of New Jersey in 1995.

Platkin thanked Taggart, saying she "provided steadfast leadership" at the prosecutor's office and has served the people of the state "honorably."

"We are all grateful for her service," Platkin said.
