Attorneys for cop killer Markeith Loyd ask to appeal conviction in Florida Supreme Court

Convicted cop killer Markeith Loyd had his appeal heard before the Florida Supreme Court on Tuesday.

The hearing lasted approximately 40 minutes. Both the defense team and the prosecutors presented their case. Now, Loyd’s fate lies in the hands of the Florida Supreme Court justices.

Lloyd is trying to appeal his conviction and death sentence.

He was found guilty of the 2017 murder of Orlando Police Lieutenant Debra Clayton.

Loyd’s attorneys want a new trial and have said that he was not competent to be sentenced.

He was first convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon, and her unborn child in 2019.

Loyd was sentenced to five consecutive life terms in that case and is currently incarcerated at the Union Correctional Institution in Raiford, Florida.

Now that court is adjourned, it is up to the Florida Supreme Court justices to decide if Loyd deserves a new trial and hearing to decide his sentence.
