Atwater founder acquires pre-prohibition Lansing Brewing Company

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The founder of Atwater Brewery in Grand Rapids has acquired Lansing Brewing Company.

Mark Rieth, the former owner of West Michigan’s Atwater Brewery, has acquired a majority stake in the Lansing Brewing Company through his new Detroit Liquid Ventures, a Tuesday release says.

The Lansing Brewing Company has a long history, starting around 1898. It was shut down during the prohibition, before opening back up again in 2015.

What do changing tastes mean for Grand Rapids’ craft brew industry?

“I wasn’t sure I’d come back to the craft beer industry, but I’m a certified beer lover and this was a unique opportunity to connect my two favorite cities, Detroit and Lansing, Motor City meets Capital City,” Rieth said in the release. “LBC is a respected regional brand and allows me to combine my passions for brewing unique, high quality and easy drinking beers while also supporting Lansing and the Michigan State Spartan community!”

The new Detroit Liquid Venture offers a line of Irish style ales brewed in Detroit. Rieth said with the company’s line, plus Lansing Brewing Company’s line of more than 20 locally brewed beers and ciders, Detroit Liquid Ventures has “a strong foundation.”

“We’re fired up and ready to go!” he said.

Lansing Brewing Company, located at 518 E. Shiawassee St. in Lansing’s Stadium District, will continue with its normal service and hours of operation.

“Our roots run deep in the Lansing community so finding a partner and leader who celebrates our vision and passion for serving hand crafted hospitality was important to us,” Jeremy McKowen, general manager at LBC, said.
