Atwater police arrest suspect accused of stabbing, attacking man with horseshoe

A suspect has been arrested in connection with a stabbing attack on a man at a park in Atwater, according to authorities.

At about 9:19 a.m. Monday, officers responded to a report of an injured person at Osborne Park in the 500 block of East Bellevue Road, according to the Atwater Police Department.

When officers arrived on the scene they found a 36-year-old unhoused man suffering from multiple stab wounds. Police said officers determined that in addition to being stabbed, the man was assaulted with a metal horseshoe. He was transported by air ambulance to a Modesto hospital in critical condition.

After a search of the area and using information obtained from the public, officers arrested David Lucas, 42, an unhoused man from Atwater, in connection with the attack. Lucas was booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of felony attempted murder and violation of post release community supervision, according to jail records. He remains in custody in lieu of $500,000 bond.
