Auburn baseball vs. Ole Miss: Score, live updates in 2022 College World Series Saturday

Before Butch Thompson coached Auburn baseball, he was an assistant at Mississippi State, working in his home state from 2009-15.

But when he grew up in Aberdeen, Mississippi, that's not the school Thompson rooted for in the Egg Bowl rivalry.

"I guess I was an Ole Miss fan," he said.

In his seventh year at Auburn, he's back in the College World Series and starting against, sure enough, Ole Miss.

Can the Tigers (42-20) score a win Saturday (6 p.m. CT, ESPN2) in Omaha, Nebraska, to start the festivities? It's double elimination, but there's a sense of urgency in an opener where Auburn is the higher seed. Ole Miss (37-22) was widely projected to be outside of the NCAA Tournament field on selection day, but the Rebels slipped into the bracket then stormed past Arizona, Miami and Southern Miss.

Auburn will start Joseph Gonzalez, the team's Sunday pitcher. The winner plays Arkansas on Monday after the Razorbacks' 17-2 win against Stanford. The loser faces the second-seeded Cardinal in an elimination game.
