Auburn basketball's Wendell Green Jr. expects decision on 2023-24 season 'next week'

Auburn basketball guard Wendell Green Jr. has spent two seasons with the Tigers, helping coach Bruce Pearl's team to a regular-season SEC championship during the 2021-22 season and a couple of NCAA Tournament wins, including one over Iowa this month.

Whether Green plans on coming back for a third season remains unclear, though. In an interview with "Next Round Live" on Thursday, the 5-foot-11 Detroit native said he plans to make a decision soon.

"I think I'll have an answer for you guys next week," said Green, who has been making weekly appearances on the show throughout March Madness.

Asked if his decision hinges on whomever Auburn lands via the transfer portal, Green said it doesn't have much of an impact.

"Not really. ... I came to Auburn with five other guys knowing that I would have to compete for a position and to play the minutes I've played the past two years," he explained. "So, I know that's just what it is every year, no matter where you're at. ...

"It's mainly just looking at my future (and) what's best for me."

Green was also pressed on the idea of other programs reaching out to him, which is not allowed until a player has officially entered the portal. He said that hasn't happened, but joked that a former teammate at Eastern Kentucky, where he spent his freshman season, has been trying to recruit him to Missouri, but it's been "nothing too serious."

"That would be very shocking," Green quipped when asked about the possibility of him playing at Missouri next season.

Green transferred to Auburn in April 2021 after he averaged 15.8 points and five assists in his lone season at Eastern Kentucky.

"The most successful teams are the teams that stick it through, have guys that have been there three or four years and, you know, have been through everything" Green said. "I think, from a team perspective, (the transfer portal) hurts a lot. But individually, I'm not going to hate on anybody doing that because it's something I've done."
