Auburn football weather delay: Game suspended by lightning as Tigers face Mercer on Saturday

AUBURN — Auburn football and Mercer entered a weather delay during the Tigers' 2022 season-opening game Saturday.

The game, which started at 6 p.m. CT (ESPN+), was suspended by lightning in the third quarter with Auburn leading, 35-7.

Fans were asked to evacuate Jordan-Hare Stadium and take shelter. The game is scheduled to resume by 10 p.m. Buildings surrounding the stadium are open for shelter in case of more lightning, and reentry is allowed as the game resumes.

When lightning is detected within eight miles of the stadium, the game is suspended. By rule, play can only resume after 30 minutes pass without lightning within eight miles.

Auburn is more than a 30-point favorite against FCS Mercer (1-0), which crushed Morehead State 63-13 last week. Bryan Harsin's Tigers are seeking their first win since Oct. 30, 2021, when they knocked off top-10 Ole Miss. After that, the year ended on a five-game skid, giving Auburn its first losing season since 2012.
