Auburn football's director of player personnel leaves for job on Georgia Southern staff

AUBURN — Ryan Smith, Auburn football's director of player personnel, is leaving the program for Clay Helton's new Georgia Southern staff, according to a report from Footballscoop.com.

Smith was hired by Auburn first-year coach Bryan Harsin in March, but it wasn't his first time at Auburn: In 2018, Smith worked as a personnel assistant for former coach Gus Malzahn. A Baylor graduate, he has also had stints at North Carolina and Division II Angelo State in Texas.

Helton, a former Auburn quarterback, was fired by USC in September after spending parts of seven years as the Trojans' head coach. He was announced as Georgia Southern's hire Nov. 2.
