Litchfield's Alex Powell wins The State Journal-Register's athlete of the week poll

Litchfield's Alex Powell won The State Journal-Register's athlete of the week poll.

The senior wrestler generated 48% or 1,580 votes after winning the Class 1A Auburn Regional title at 113 pounds. Beardstown's Owen O'Hara was second with 22% (725 votes) while Auburn's Cole Edie was third with 7% (242).

The poll closed at noon on Friday. Information about the nominees is below. If you have trouble viewing the poll, click on this link. Emma Sneddon of Nokomis was last week's winner.

Another poll will open on Tuesday.

Aden Byal, Chatham Glenwood, wrestling

The senior won the Class 2A Chatham Glenwood Regional title at 152 pounds after he pinned his first opponent in 39 seconds and topped Lincoln's Isaac Decker with a 9-1 major decision in the final. He advances to the individual sectionals with a 39-4 overall mark as the Titans also won the team regional title.

James Cotton, Jacksonville, wrestling

The junior highlighted the team's Class 2A Jacksonville Regional title with a 7-5 decision over Lanphier senior Connor Janssen (30-4) for a ranked win at 160 pounds on Saturday. He will enter the upcoming individual sectionals with a 34-8 record.

Cole Edie, Auburn, wrestling

The senior heavyweight pinned Shelbyville's Andre Townsend to help the Trojans secure the team title with 207 points in the Class 1A Auburn Regional on Saturday. The Trojans narrowly bested Vandalia’s 205.5 to advance to the Vandalia dual team sectionals against Cahokia on Feb. 21. Edie (41-2) was also last week's nominee after winning the Rich Lovellette Invitational in Litchfield at the end of the regular season.

Izzy Hassebrock, Sacred Heart-Griffin, girls basketball

The sophomore guard helped buoy the Cyclones to a 35-22 Central State Eight Conference win over Rochester with 11 points, including six made free throws, at Jim Belz Gymnasium on Friday.

Bryar Lane, Petersburg PORTA, wrestling

The 182-pound senior won all three of his matches via pin in the Class 1A Macomb Regional on Saturday. He topped Quincy Notre Dame’s Taylin Scott via pin in the second period of the final. He improved to 45-3 overall.

Dawson McConnell, Lincoln, wrestling

The sophomore improved to 42-5 overall after winning the Class 2A Chatham Glenwood Regional at 160 pounds. He pinned Mattoon's Jason Skocy in the second period of the final.

Owen O'Hara, Beardstown, wrestling

The senior won the Class 1A Macomb Regional title at 220 pounds with a 6-2 decision over Macomb’s Ethan Ladd. He burnished his record to 32-1 overall.

Alex Powell, Litchfield, wrestling

The senior rolled to the Class 1A Auburn Regional title with two pins at 113 pounds on Saturday. He dispatched Mount Zion's Mason Gray with a fall in less than two minutes to move to 38-4 overall.
