Auburn home explosion result of using butane to extract THC from marijuana, officials say

Dec. 20—AUBURN — A man suffered serious injuries following an explosion at a house in Auburn on Sunday night.

The explosion occurred at 53 Broadview Ave. around 7:50 p.m., and was a result of using butane to extract THC from marijuana, according to Shannon Moss, public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

A 35-year-old man suffered serious burns and injuries and was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where he was stabilized, before being transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland, Moss said. The man is expected to survive and his name is not being released at this time.

Four other people were inside the home at the time — a 33-year old woman, a 7-year-old girl, a 70-year-old woman and a 71-year-old male — but they were not injured, she said.

The explosion caused extensive structural damage to the residence and the home is now uninhabitable.
