Auburn runner struck by motorcycle, seriously injured

Sep. 24—AUBURN — An Auburn man was seriously hurt Thursday afternoon when he was struck by a motorcycle while jogging on South Witham Road.

Police said the motorcyclist, Mason Perez, 27, of Auburn, was cresting a hill when he collided with 52-year-old Tyrone Fulgham at about 5 p.m.

Perez, who was not seriously hurt, attempted to render aid to the victim until emergency crews arrived, police said.

Fulgham, who suffered what police described as a serious, life-threatening injury to his leg, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston where he remained in serious condition late Thursday night.

Auburn police reconstructed the crash site, with help from Lewiston police, as part of their ongoing investigation.

"Although contributing factors to the crash have not yet been determined," Auburn Deputy Police Chief Tim Cougle wrote in a press release, "a witness did report to police that the motorcycle driven by Perez was speeding at the time of the crash."

Perez, who was riding a 2015 Kawasaki Vulcan, was charged with driving a motorcycle without a proper motorcycle license, Cougle said, and failing to produce evidence of insurance.

Fulgham is a member of a local running group and is well-known for his participation in local marathons and fundraisers.
