Auditions for 'La Cage Aux Folles' set for Dec. 5-6 at Lafayette's Civic Theatre

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Auditions for Civic Theatre's "La Cage Aux Folles" are coming up from Dec. 5-6.

"La Cage Aux Folles" is a musical that follows a gay couple, a manager of a nightclub that features drag entertainment as well as the star of the drag show.

Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette recently announced auditions for the musical, the requirements to join the cast, the available characters and descriptions of the characters as well as the voices needed to fit them.

Characters listed as available to audition for in "La Cage Aux Folles" includes: The Cagelles, Chantal, Hanna, Phaedra, Angelique, Bitelle, Mercedes, Albin, Georges, Jean-Michel, Jacob, Anne Dindon, Eduard Dindon, Marie Dindon, Jacqueline, Francis, as well as an optional couple who are friends with Georges and Albin.

The first requirements listed on Civic Theatre's informational page about auditioning to "La Cage Aux Folles" is that all prospective cast members must be above the age of 18 and must be prepared to show proof of vaccination against COVID-19.

Further materials needed to audition include a prepared set of 32 bars of a song and sheet music for a provided accompanist. Those interested in auditioning should dress in shoes and clothes appropriate for a short "movement audition," according to Civic Theatre's website.

"Audition appointments are strongly encouraged, walk-ins will be seen after all appointments have been completed," Civic Theatre's website states. "Contact Amelia at amelia@lafayettecivic.org to schedule an audition appointment."

The words "flamboyant" and "fabulous" appear most often in the characters' descriptions. Akin to the settings of "Kinky Boots" or "Cabaret," the club featured in "La Cage Aux Folles" will have drag performances that will be fun, loud and, of course, flamboyant and fabulous.

Auditions for "La Cage Aux Folles" will take place at the Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette – 320 N. 5th St., Lafayette – from 6:30-9 p.m. on Dec. 5 and 6. The website states that if callbacks are needed, a third round of auditions will take place at the same time and location on Dec. 7.
