Auditions open for Holmes Center for the Arts summer production of 'Guys and Dolls'

BERLIN TOWNSHIP — Holmes Center for the Arts is bringing the classic musical "Guys and Dolls" to Ohio Star Theater July 21-23 under the direction of Grady Suggs, Jr.

Walk-in auditions will be held 6-8 p.m. May 17-19 or and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. May 20 at the Holmes Center for the Arts, 5200 State Route 39, behind the Burger King in Berlin.

Prepare one minute of a show tune to sing. No accompaniment will be provided, but those who audition may take their your own back-up track or sing a cappella. The song can be from any musical. Candidates will be asked to read from a script and may be asked to do some dance steps as well.

Anyone who cannot be present during the auditions times may submit an audition video  info@holmescenterforthearts.org. Auditions are for ages 12 through all adult ages.

Rehearsals start the week of June 5, 6-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and will gradually increase closer to the show. Performance dues for each performer are $80. Scholarships are available.

Suggs Jr. is making his musical directorial debut with "Guys and Dolls." He has performed with HCA twice, as Professor Bhaer in "Little Women" and as Uncle Drosselmeyer in "The Nutcracker."

Suggs Jr. has been a lover of theater and music since it swept him off his feet in high school. He performed on stage in Friday Night Live at Indiana Wesleyan University, and currently helps coach the youth drama team at Wooster Church of the Nazarene. He works at GOJO Industries in Wooster.

"Guys and Dolls" gambles with luck and love under the bright lights of Broadway. The show ran for 1,200 performances when it opened on Broadway in 1950. It received nearly unanimous positive reviews and won a bevy of awards, including Tony Awards, Drama Desks and Oliviers.
