'Audrey Saves the Universe' in new Children's Theatre miniseries

May 4—Children's Theatre Company actor Autumn Ness has been creating the character of Audrey and her story for more than a decade. When the pandemic sent everyone home, Ness decided it was time for Audrey to get about her mission of saving the universe. Along with her husband, actor Reed Sigmund (who also directed the show), their two kids and dog, Ness created "Audrey Saves the Universe," a seven-episode mini-series, which makes its premiere online this weekend.

According to a CTC news release: "From epic chemical explosions to jumping off their roof, Ness and Sigmund, along with their two children and dog, take audiences into the chaotic imagination of a child with big dreams."

Audrey is a 9-year-old girl making a movie inside a tent in her bedroom. Fans of Gilda Radner's Judy Miller character on "Saturday Night Live" will love Audrey. But anyone who appreciates the extreme enthusiasm and all-in attitude of a creative kid will love watching Audrey create her epic movie — while dealing with obstacles like school bullies and her obnoxious cousin Kyle.

"I love this character," Ness said in the CTC release. "She's this mighty steamroller of discovery, and while everyone around her sees creativity and artistry as a cute little hobby, she sees the value and absolute necessity of imagination and invention. I hope everyone who watches it gets so super hyped up that they sing a power jam, go make a weird painting, and dance until their feet fall off."

This is the second play Ness has written to be debuted by CTC. Her previously announced "Babble Lab" was postponed from the 2020-21 season due to COVID shutdowns.

"Audrey Saves the Universe" runs May 7 through May 28. All seven episodes run a total of 90 minutes and are all released on the date of purchase. Tickets are pay what you will, starting at $15. Tickets and more information can be found at childrenstheatre.org/audrey.
