Augusta commissioners on Tuesday approved new, lower millage rates for property taxes from 2022.

The countywide rate for 2023 is 12.100 mills. After a sales tax credit it will be 6.664 mills for all Richmond County residents. That's 1.322 mills lower than last year's rate of 7.986 mills. That is not the total property tax rate for residents, though, as other taxes may be added on top of it, including from the Richmond County Board of Education.

The vote was 7-0, with three commissioners − Alvin Mason, Tony Lewis and Brandon Garrett − absent from the meeting.

The mill rate, or "millage", is applied to each $1,000 worth of a property's taxable value, which is 40% of its assessed value.
