Augusta County Sheriff's Office: Two arrested in shooting of teen

RAPHINE — Two people have been charged in a Saturday morning shooting that seriously injured a 16-year-old boy near Raphine.

The Augusta County Sheriff's Office said a 17-year-old has been arrested in the shooting, and an adult male was charged with being an accessory, a press release said.

At about 1:41 a.m. on Saturday, deputies were called to the 5400 block of Cold Springs Road for a reported gunshot victim, a press release said.

A 16-year-old boy was taken from the scene by members from Augusta County Fire-Rescue and the Raphine Volunteer Fire Company to Augusta Health in Fishersville. From there, he was flown to UVA Health in Charlottesville by AirCare 5.

Following the shooting, the juvenile suspect was found in an apartment building on Plunkett Street in Staunton. Deputies assisted the Staunton Police Department and secured the residence for several hours, with no response from the juvenile or his family inside.

Criminal petitions, a detention order, and a search warrant were obtained to enter the apartment. The juvenile was taken into custody without further incident, the release said, and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a shooting and discharging a firearm in public. The juvenile is in custody at the Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center.

The Staunton Police Department’s Critical Incident Response Team was utilized to search the apartment for additional suspects. However, none were located.

The second suspect, Daniel Maurice, 20, of Staunton, is charged with being an accessory before the fact. He is being held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail in Verona.

Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith thanked the quick response from the Staunton Police Department, and noted the shooting was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
