Augusta pedestrian, Aiken motorist die in separate incidents over the weekend

Augusta-area authorities are investigating the deaths of two elderly men who were in separate incidents over the weekend.

Carl Johnson, 76, of Augusta was hit by a vehicle on the 4700 block of Mike Padgett Highway on Friday night, according to Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:50 p.m. It is being investigated as a pedestrian fatality.

Samuel Green, 79, of Aiken was driving his 2006 Chevy Trailblazer west on Wagener Road in Aiken on Saturday when he crossed the centerline, ran off the left side of the road, and hit a tree on the 3000 block near Holcomb Road at 4:39 p.m., according to Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables. Green was pronounced dead on the scene. A passenger was transported to Wellstar MCG, formerly known as Augusta University Medical Center, where their condition is unknown as of Saturday.

Autopsies have been scheduled for Johnson and Green.
