Local officials warn citizens about below freezing temperatures

Just because Augusta isn't getting much wintry precipitation doesn't mean locals and travelers shouldn't beware.

Columbia County sent out a news release Thursday morning, warning citizens about the low temperatures.

"Forecasters from the US National Weather Service project extremely cold and windy weather this week into next week," according to the release. "Steady winds of around 20 mph are expected Friday, December 23, 2022 and Saturday, December 24, 2022 which will make the temperatures feel like single digits."

The county urges locals to wear multiple layers of warm clothing to mitigate the cold and wind chill while outside and prepare their homes with insulation, caulking and weather stripping to keep out the cold.

It also advised residents to refrain from using outdoor heaters or an oven to heat the inside of homes.

"Columbia County Emergency Management Agency encourages you to stay indoors if you can and avoid long exposure to the freezing temperatures and windy conditions," according to the release. "In addition, don’t forget your furry friends. If you’re cold, they’re cold. Please bring your pets inside."
