ALLIANCE – Paulus Orthodontics once again this year will sponsor a blood drive at Aultman Alliance Community Hospital.

The drive will run 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 2. Registration is required to donate, and can be done at redcrossblood.org or by calling Aultman Alliance Volunteer Services at 330-596-7821.

Paulus has sponsored a December blood drive for the past decade. In a release, Aultman Alliance said Dr. Michael Paulus was prompted to act when his nephew Ryan was diagnosed with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome as an infant.

“When he was 4 years old, he needed open heart surgery, and we knew that he would need additional blood transfusions,” said Dr. Paulus. “Thankfully, I was a match and was able to be his donor at the time. It was then that I realized how great the need is for blood donors. Since 2011, our staff has supported this drive. Everyone contributes to help make the event a great success.”

The drive this year has extra urgency, as the American Red Cross has for months said the need for donation is great, due to COVID-19 and a decrease in overall donations.

According to the American Red Cross, every day in the U.S. approximately 36,000 units of red blood cells are needed. That means nearly every two seconds, someone needs blood.
