Aurora girls sixth, boys ninth at Kenston cross country invitational

The Aurora varsity girls cross country team finished sixth and the Greenmen boys were ninth at the Frank Gibas Invitational at Kenston on Saturday.

Senior Grace Barto led Aurora's girls with a 23rd place finish of 20 minutes, 57.6 seconds. She was followed by two freshmen, Isabella Cicero and Samantha Bucalo. Cicero finished 33rd in 21:35.9 and Bucalo was 38th in 21:52.6.

Aurora's other scorers were junior Eva Logan, 49th in 22:22.2, and sophomore Sydney Langell, 57th in 22:35.0.

In the varsity boys race, junior Robert Will claimed seventh place with a time of 16:43.8. He was just 24 seconds behind the race winner, David D'Altorio of Boardman.

Also for the Greenmen, sophomore Zachary Ploskunak was 21st (17:22.7); freshman Nathan Eminian was 49th (18:20.6); senior Nathan New was 75th (19:29.5), and senior Zachary Zabell was 78th (19:31.9).

Aurora runners also competed in an open race. The Aurora boys were second to Stow with five runners placing in the top 19 finishers.

Freshman Zachary Best ran 18:46.5 to finish fifth; sophomore Kyle Lancaster (19:01.5) was eighth; sophomore Jack Berendt (19:15.0) was 13th; senior Logan Oden (19:16.8) was 14th and senior Porter Aardema (19:33.2) was 19th.

In the open girls race, Aurora was seventh as a team, led by senior Alexis Horvath, fourth in 22:59.7. Also scoring for the Greenmen were sophomore Lauren Baka, 25th in 24:29.6; freshman Adeline Bates, 36th in 27:14.8; senior Lily Brainard, 58th in 28:19.4, and freshman Eleanor Hanff, 61st in 28:26.2.

The cross country teams are scheduled to run at the Oscar Grant Invitational in Trumbull County on Thursday, September 1.

Volleyball drops two matches

On August 25, Aurora fell to Twinsburg, 25-21, 25-14, 25-22.

Senior Sophia DeVine had 10 kills and two blocks for the Greenmen and junior Brooke Gecina added six kills and 24 digs. Junior Olivia Salgado had two aces and 27 assists, while junior Maddy Shanholtzer finished with 15 digs.

The Greenmen rebounded on Saturday, August 27, with a three-set victory over Stow, 25-16, 25-7, 25-17.

Junior Cailor Roche led Aurora with eight kills, while Gecina and junior Ava McGovern added seven apiece. Shanholtzer and DeVine had six and four aces, respectively, while Gecina and Salgado added three each.

DeVine also had four blocks and Roche had three. Shanholtzer added 10 digs and Salgado finished with 26 assists.

The Greenmen (1-2) were scheduled for Suburban League matches at Copley on Tuesday, August 30, and at home against Cuyahoga Falls on Thursday, September 1. Aurora will also play at North Ridgeville in a non-league match on Saturday, September 3.

Upcoming events

The Aurora boys soccer team is 0-2-1 in three non-league matches, and will open Suburban League play on Tuesday, August 30, at Copley.

The girls soccer team is 1-1-0 and will open Suburban League play at Copley on Wednesday, August 31, and travel to Fairview for a non-league match on Saturday, September 3.

The girls golf team will play Brecksville twice in three days, at Seneca Golf Course on Tuesday, August 30, and at Raccoon Hill on Thursday, September 1.

The girls tennis team was scheduled for four matches this week, at home against Cuyahoga Falls on Monday, August 29; at Wadsworth on Tuesday, August 30; and home against Tallmadge on Wednesday, August 31, and Western Reserve Academy on Thursday, September 1.
