Aurora High 2020 graduate Emily Hanna recently completed an internship as a photojournalist with the multimedia/creative services team of C-SPAN in Washington, D.C.

Hanna said a key lesson from her internship was “don’t be afraid to reach out, and then keep reaching out.”

For example, she asked New York Times White House photographer Doug Mills to let her “shadow” him on assignment, and Hanna joined him.

Hanna is a junior in Ohio University’s School of Visual Communication. She was one of six OU journalism interns in Washington this fall.

While accompanying Mills, Hanna said she photographed the Marine One helicopter, President Joe Biden’s dinner with defense leaders and his speech about hidden fees and late payments.

Along with the C-SPAN crew, she attended U.S. Senate hearings on war crimes in Ukraine in late September, and a women members of Congress versus women of the press softball game, which raised money to help women facing breast cancer.

“My photos [of the softball activities] were widely displayed, including on social media platforms,” she said.

Hanna also created a promotional video for C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal” program. “Getting to hit the ‘on air’ button was a great accomplishment and something I didn’t think I would ever do,” she said.

She photographed the Capitol Christmas tree lighting for Alto Press, a German-based global photo agency, the women’s march on Oct. 18 in Washington, protesters supporting women in Iran and other news events.

Hanna plans to graduate in 2024 and return to Washington to pursue a career in political and news photojournalism.
