Aurora High Scholl swim teams continue Suburban League dominance

The Aurora girls swim & dive team and the boys swim & dive team have been something special for the last several years.

At the start of the 2019-20 season, the banners for both the girls' and boys' swim teams in the high school gymnasium were empty. After Saturday night, the girls team has now won four Suburban League championships in a row and the boys have won three of the last four.

This program has been on an amazing run, which is all the more astounding considering the lack of a pool in the community, which is what usually anchors such a dominant run.

Heading into the end of the season, the teams had two swim meets left against conference opponents, with Highland first on Jan. 20 and Revere on Jan. 28. Highland has been a recent swimming power and a fierce rival to Aurora, so that meet would really test the mettle of the Greenmen swimmers.

The meet against Highland was also Senior Night, so before the swimming started, the Aurora teams honored their graduating seniors: Porter Aardema, Maxwell Bailey, Jacob Barry, Alayna Brooker, Nate New, and Annabelle Zamary. After honoring the seniors, the team was clearly energized, and ready to take on Highland. Once the swimming got underway, the Aurora teams didn’t disappoint, as they took off to strong starts with wins by both the girls and boys medley relay teams. From there, they didn’t look back, cruising to solid wins over the Highland teams. The girls triumphed 106-75, and the boys took the win 100-74.

The following Saturday night, the girls had already assured themselves of at least a share of the conference championship, but the boys needed to beat Revere to get their championship title. The team came in confident but focused, fully understanding the task before them. The coaches also carefully chose the matchups for each event to give them the best chance of winning against Revere.

The Greenmen girls and boys were all loose on the deck and having fun before the start, but once the meet began, they were all business in wrapping up their wins. Neither the girls nor the boys wanted to leave any doubt about which team was the best in the conference, and they did just that by dispatching a game Revere squad. The Aurora girls notched a 92-78 victory while the Aurora boys dominated Revere with a final score of 106-63.

With the conference titles assured, the teams can now focus on the state tournament, with sectional on Feb. 6-11, followed by the district on Feb. 13-18 and, ultimately, the state tournament Feb. 21-25.
