The new Aurora Medical Center — Sheboygan County will open Sunday. Here’s what to know about the hospital.

SHEBOYGAN - A long line of visitors filtered through the new Aurora Medical Center – Sheboygan County hospital, 3400 Union Ave., at an open house June 29.

The new facility will open at 7 a.m. this Sunday, following the opening of its new medical office building in April.

“When we first talked about building a medical center and office building here, we spoke about the importance of making care more convenient for the residents, especially as more people call Sheboygan County their home,” Aric Kinney, president of Aurora Medical Center – Sheboygan County, said at the open house June 29.

The new facility is 345,000 square feet and has 113 beds, including five procedure rooms, 11 critical care rooms and 13 operating rooms.

At the open house, Kinney thanked the facility’s partners, including HGA Architects and Mortenson Construction as well as the Kohler Company, who worked with Advocate Aurora to develop the 56-acre site.

“They understand what this medical center means to the community, and we are grateful to be able to serve this community with their relationship,” Kinney said.

Kohler Executive Chairman Herbert V. Kohler Jr. said it is reassuring to know that “world-class medical staff” will be providing care at the new facility.

“Crucial to having quality of life is a commitment to wellness and having local access to world-class medical care,” Kohler said. “No doubt Aurora Medical Center will only enhance that conviction.”

Construction for the $330 million facility began in summer 2019.

The new hospital will offer services such as an expanded Level 4 emergency department and trauma center, spine services, women’s health and cancer care.

The hospital will also feature new spaces, such a non-denominational meditation space for patients and staff, a rehabilitation area and a new birthing center.

The medical office building will offer specialty services, such as orthopedics and sports health, cardiology, pulmonology, general surgery and a neonatal intensive care unit and inpatient adult and adolescent behavioral health services.

The Aurora Health Center, 2414 Kohler Memorial Drive, will remain open, providing services such as ophthalmology, pediatrics and urgent care.

Kinney said the new facility will help residents live well through “increasing access to health education, resources, breaking down barriers to preventative care, and encouraging sustainability in our communities.”

He also thanked the Advocate Aurora team and clinician members.

“Your commitment to the patients we serve each day inspires us to keep moving forward,” Kinney said.

Pam Reiss, member of the Aurora Medical Center patient advisory team, shared an experience she had with the Aurora staff at the open house. She began with a Winston Churchill quote: “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.”

“Our family is very proud to say that we have been shaped by the benefits of the services,” Reiss said. “My husband and I are both co-guardians for my sister-in-law, who is cognitively challenged. And in the onset of COVID, it was determined she needed emergency surgery. She was scared. We were not able to be there. But the staff was just phenomenal.”
