Aurora Oshkosh recognized for sustainability efforts and more news in weekly dose

OSHKOSH - Aurora Medical Center - Oshkosh has been recognized with the 2023 Sustainability Championship Award.

Aurora is one of 10 hospitals nationwide to be given the award by the American Society for Health Care Engineering, part of the American Hospital Association.

To qualify, a hospital must achieve an Environmental Protection Agency Energy Star score of 75 or higher, possess Energy Star certification, and diligently track energy water and greenhouse gas emissions. The site also must show sustainability measures taken above and beyond peer applicants.

In addition to best-in-class building performance, Aurora Medical Center – Oshkosh was acknowledged for installing solar panels, recovering condensate water from HVAC coils to cooling towers, and planning and installing a “food forest” for teammates and the community.

Oshkosh, along with five other Aurora Health Care hospitals, received ASHE’s Sustained Performance Award. The other sites include Aurora Medical Center – Manitowoc County, Aurora Lakeland Medical Center, Aurora Medical Center – Grafton, Aurora Medical Center – Burlington, and Aurora St. Luke’s South Shore.

The Sustained Performance award is given to hospitals that continue to accomplish sustainability goals.

POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremony to be held Sept. 16

The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 437 will hold its annual POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremony at 1 p.m. Sept. 16 at South Park in Oshkosh. It will be held at the War Memorial site at the corner of Ohio Street and West 12th Avenue.

The ceremony is in honor of those who were held captive and returned, as well as those who remain missing. The speaker will be Major General (ret.) Daniel Ammerman.

Oshkosh library programs include DIY, author talk

A variety of programs are scheduled for the coming week at the Oshkosh Public Library, 106 Washington Ave.

This month’s Adult DIY, offered at 6 p.m. Sept. 12, is Sunburst Wall Decor. The class is free and supplies are provided. Registration is required by calling 920-236-5205.

On Sept. 13, adults can meet author Edward Bentley who will talk about his book, “What a Way to Go: Death in Oshkosh in the 1880s,” at 6 p.m.

Then on Sept. 14, the Echoes of the Past program will feature the “History of the Foote Mansion in Eureka,” at 6 p.m. The program will be presented by author Daniel Butkiewicz.

Oshkosh Garden Club to hold meeting Sept. 14

The Oshkosh Garden Club will meet at 5:45 Sept. 14 at Delta Restaurant, 515 N. Sawyer St.

The meeting begins with socializing and dinner, followed by the meeting at 7 p.m.

Club member Josh Webb, owner of Oakwood Gardens Reimagined, will host a question-and-answer period about landscaping at 6:30 p.m.

'What a Way to Go' author to speak at Caramel Crisp

Author Ed Bentley will discuss his book, “What a Way to Go! Death in the 1880s,” at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Caramel Crisp Bookstore, 200 City Center. The event is a chance to meet the author and purchase a signed copy of the book.

Prior to using photographs in the newspapers, writers would use a graphic style of writing so readers could visualize the events that occurred in their area, sometimes they were horrific, tragic events. The book highlights such articles and obituaries from the 1880s in Oshkosh.
