Aurora standout golfer Millard set to compete in U.S. Women's Amateur

Brooklyn Millard of Aurora, runner-up at the 2021 Division I state tournament, will compete in this week's U.S. Women's Amateur at the Chambers Bay Club in University Place, Washington.

Millard qualified for the prestigious event at Saginaw (Mich.) Country Club, firing a 1-under-par 70 to tie for first place and advance to the national U.S.G.A event. She will tee off on the 10th hole at 7: 44 a.m. with Angela Yilin Liu of Irvine, Calif., and Katie Li of Basking Ridge, N.J. All three girls are still in high school, and will be in a 156-player field ranging in age from Anna Fang (13) of San Diego to Martha Leach (80) of Hebrong, Ky. The average age of the field is 19.

All golfers compete in two 18-hole rounds of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday before the field is cut to the top 64 golfers for match play. Competition continues through Aug. 14, when the 36-hole championship match takes place at Chambers Bay.

The U.S. Women’s Amateur will be televised on the Golf Channel beginning Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Amateurs Wrap Up

The final week in July is a busy time for golfers in Portage County.

Three amateur tournaments are held in July - the Portage County Kids Am, the Matt Mishler Junior Portage County Amateur and the Portage County Amateur.

Golfers from throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania graced Windmill Lakes, Sunny Hill and Raccoon Hill golf courses vying for titles. While the competition in these events is always fierce, it is often supported by the families.

Fathers caddie for their daughters and sons in both the Junior Am and the Amateur, parents cheer if the ball goes three feet in the Kids Am, and new friends are made in the Amateur with the promise to meet up and play a round of golf together during the summer.

Golfers from some of the best programs in Portage County compete in the Amateur, including Rootstown, Aurora, Mogadore and Roosevelt.

Jarrod Page, a former Kent State University standout, won the Portage County Amateur County Division despite never playing Raccoon Hill in Kent before the day of the event.

Gunnar McCollins of Massillon, champion of the Open Division and a member of the Cleveland State golf team, took the opportunity to play a practice round at Raccoon Hill where members welcomed him and gave advice on the best places to put the ball.

McCollins was the only golfer under-par for the tournament, with a 1-under combined score.

The only additional under-par round was recorded by Ben Lansinger, a former Mogadore Wildcats standout and current member of the Malone golf team, who scored a 3-under-par round at Raccoon Hill to climb the leaderboard.

Abbie Retherford, a high school golfer for the Ravenna Ravens, competed against collegiate golfers and rose to the top of the field to grab her first Amateur championship.

Players appreciate the area golf course managers who turn over their golf course to the Amateurs. A huge thank you to the players for their outstanding competition, and for keeping the game fun for everyone.

Next up is the Portage County Senior Amateur, set for the final weekend of August. Golfers may register at PCAGolf.net, email (golffam2@gmail.com) or text (330-206-9083), or register at host golf courses.
