What Austin-area teams top Fab Five high school football polls at end of regular season?

Each Monday, the American-Statesman staff writers rank the Austin area’s high school football teams in Class 6A, Class 5A, and Classes 4A through 1A plus private schools. With the end of the regular season and the start of the playoffs this week, this is the final poll of the 2022 season.

Class 6A

1. Westlake, 10-0. Last week: Beat Johnson 70-10. This week: vs. Cedar Ridge.

Since beginning UIL varsity play in 1970, Chaps — ranked No. 1 in this week’s state poll — have won 27 district titles and have 14 undefeated regular seasons.

2. Dripping Springs, 9-1. Last week: Beat Anderson 49-0. This week: vs. Manor.

With 107 points given up all year, No. 11 Tigers’ defense set a school record for fewest points allowed in a regular season.

3. Vandegrift, 9-1. Last week: Beat Westwood 56-10. This week: vs. Bowie.

In nine-game winning streak to close regular season, No. 17 Vipers outscored opponents by an average of 41-6.

4. Round Rock, 9-1. Last week: Beat Vista Ridge 51-10. This week: vs. Lake Travis.

No. 22 Dragons have played first-round foe Lake Travis just once, a playoff game they won 35-21 in 2020.

5. Lake Travis, 5-4. Last week: Game canceled. This week: vs. Round Rock.

Cavs’ losses have come against teams with a cumulative record of 38-2, and only one of those defeats — against Westlake — was by more than one possession.

Class 5A

1. Liberty Hill, 9-1. Last week: Beat Comal Pieper 47-7. This week: vs. SA Highlands.

With 51.4 points a game, No. 3 Division II Panthers are on pace to average at least 50 points per contest for third time in school history.

2. Georgetown, 8-2: Last week: Beat Cedar Park 40-14. This week: vs. NB Canyon.

With 46.4 points per game, DI Eagles on pace to break school record of 45.4 points a game set by 2012 state finalist.

3. LBJ, 8-2: Last week: Beat Crockett 49-0. This week: vs. Elgin.

Win last week for DII Jags gave program its second consecutive undisputed district title and 13th such title in school history.

4. Lockhart, 7-3. Last week: Beat Kerrville Tivy 42-28. This week: San Antonio Burbank.

With its best regular season since 2015, DII Lions back in playoffs for first time since 2019 and seeking first playoff win in seven years.

5. Rouse, 5-5: Last week: Beat Elgin 42-23. This week: vs. Crockett.

After averaging 22.3 points a game through first eight contests, Rouse scored 87 points over past two weeks to secure third straight playoff berth.

Class 4A and others

1. Wimberley, 10-0. Last week: Beat Achieve 66-0. This week: vs. San Antonio YMLA.

No. 6 4A DII Texans wrapped fourth perfect regular season in school history as well as 15th undisputed district title.

2. Regents, 10-0: Last week: Beat St. Michael’s 34-0. This week: vs. Houston Lutheran South.

No. 2 TAPPS DII Knights enter playoffs after fifth perfect regular season since beginning 11-man football in 2005.

3. Thorndale, 8-2. Last week: Beat Hearne 56-13 This week: vs. Johnson City LBJ.

2A DI Bulldogs have qualified for seventh consecutive playoffs and have missed postseason just nine times in past 40 years.

4. Granger, 8-2. Last week: Beat Bartlett 45-12. This week: vs. Somerville.

No. 10 2A DII Lions have reached playoffs in eight consecutive seasons, longest such streak in school history.

5. Lago Vista, 7-3. Last week: Beat Jarrell 48-8. This week: vs. Bandera.

4A DII Vikings, who started football program in 2000, went seven years before compiling a winning record but have had just two losing regular seasons in past 15 years.
